         Pagi-pagi seekor anak kadal kebun atau bengkarung, merayap ke sampul buku yang tergeletak di lantai kamar tidur. Buku berjudul David and Goliath karangan Malcom Gladwell. Malam tadi saya membacanya, kemudian terjatuh di lantai setelah melewati beberapa halaman. 

Anak kadal itu sepanjang jari telunjuk. Lingkar tubuhnya seperti pipet minuman. Sangat imut. Merayap ke sisi buku yang tebalnya satu-setengah centimeter, kemudian berputar-putar di sampulnya. Mungkin mencari kehangatan setelah pakarangan tergenang lantaran hujan sepanjang malam. 

Keberadaan anak kadal yang kesasar itu, membuat saya mencari tahu lebih jauh di Wikipedia. Reptil berkaki empat itu merupakan anggota suku Scincidae atau kadal sejati. Populer disebut kadal kebun karena biasa dijumpai di pekarangan, pematang sawah, dan kebun-kebun. 

Tubuhnya terlihat agak gemuk. Pergerakannya gesit. Bagian atas berwarna cokelat keemasan dengan bercak hitam kecokelatan di kedua sisi tubuhnya. Sering dijumpai berjemur di sisi jalan yang terbuka, tepi parit atau pematang sawah. Malam hari mencari kehangatan di timbunan kayu atau tumpukan batu. Makanannya beraneka seperti serangga, cacing, dan kodok kecil. Terkadang juga menyucup anak-anak rumput.

Saya mengamati pergerakan anak kadal itu sembari bersiap-siap menghalaunya agar tidak masuk ke kolong tempat tidur. Sesekali kadal itu berada di posisi kata David kemudian bergerak sedikit ke tulisan Goliath. Kadang juga bergerak ke bawah, ke posisi nama penulisnya. Terkadang juga seperti menggerakkan bagian depan tubuhnya, memperhatikan saya.

Saya ingin mengangkat buku itu tapi tak tega kadal itu akan panik kemudian lari terbirit-birit ke sisi lemari. Saya juga tidak ingin putri saya melihat ada anak kadal di atas buku. Khawatir dia akan menjerit ketakutan. 

Saya mendapat pelajaran, akan memilih posisi yang mana. Menjadi besar itu tidak selamanya menguntungkan. Seperti Goliath yang menjadi sasaran empuk batu kecil yang melayang dengan kecepatan 200 km per jam dari lontaran David. Kalau mengenai bagian tubuh yang lain mungkin masih bisa bertahan. Tapi bila mengenai bagian yang vital, bisa fatal dan membuat langsung tumbang.
